What service does a water heater typically require?

Tank-style water heaters should be flushed annually and have the anode rod inspected. The anode rod is a sacrificial component inside the tank that attracts corrosive minerals to protect the tank itself — when it wears out, the tank starts to go. Tankless heaters also benefit from annual flushing using a descaling solution to prevent mineral buildup inside the heat exchanger, which can reduce efficiency over time.
